Dingjiazhai Fm

Period:
Permian

Age Interval:
P1 (45), Cisuralian Epoch (Early Permian)

Province:
Yunnan

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located at the back of the Dingjiazhai Village 4 km to the east of the Wangbei region, Shidian County, Yunnan Province. It was named by the Regional Geological Survey Party under the Geological Bureau of Yunnan Province in 1980.

Lithology and Thickness

Glacial-marine. Composed of three members, with the Lower and Middle members consisting of dark-grey pebble-bearing siltstones, pebble-bearing sandy shale and siltstone, with a thickness of 114 m. Upper member consists of 3 m-thick bioclastic limestone and purple iron-alumina siltstone.

Lithology Pattern:
Glacial till

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Disconformable contact with the underlying Pumenqian Fm of the Lower Carboniferous Series

Upper contact

Regional extent

Distributed in the Baoshan, Shidian, Yongde and Zhenkang areas, with its thickness being of 397 m in the Aluotian area of Yongde County, of 464 m in the Qingshuigou area of Baoshan City, of 133 m in the Sanbazi area of Baoshan City, and of 117 m on the slope of Dongshan Mt. in the Youwang area of Shidian County.

Fossils

Lower and middle members yield Brachiopods represented by the Stepanoviella fauna. The features of the brachiopod fauna of the formation are similar to those of the Stepanoviella fauna from the middle member of the Jilong Fm in the Himalayan and of the Pondoproductus fauna from the Pangduo Gr in the Lhasa region.

Upper member yields abundant animal fossils, such as Brachiopods represented by Stepanoviella flexuosa; Corals represented by Lytvolasma minor, Plerophyllum simplex; and Fusulinida belonging to the Eoparafusulina fauna, including E. pusilla, E. maoshanensis, Triticites parvulus, T. cf. incisus, etc. As for the Fusulinida fossils in this formation, they are comparable with those found in the Licha Fm of Tuoba area, Chando City, and in the Longmuco Fm of Ritu County.

Age

Cisuralian Epoch (Early Permian); Span of Asselian (or even uppermost Carboniferous) through lower Artinskian according to Shuzhong Shen et al. (2019; China Integrated Strat.); but Carboniferous Lexicon (Chinese) suggests base is mid-Zisongian (= upper Asselian)

Age Span:

    Beginning stage:
Asselian

    Fraction up in beginning stage:
0.5

    Beginning date (Ma):
296.21

    Ending stage:
Artinskian

Fraction up in the ending stage:

Depositional setting

Lower and middle members are interpreted as glacial-marine sediments.

Upper member is interpreted as normal marine deposits.
